The inverted process marked one of few examples when the console version of a game influenced arcade hardware. Soviet researchers Alexey Pajitnov and Dmitry Pavlovsky knew that all work and no play made for dull scientists. Employed at the Computer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Pavlovsky noticed sixteen-year-old Gerasimov writing an encryption program for Microsoft’s DOS command-line operating system. They began to chat, and Pavlovsky said he liked to write games in his spare time, and introduced Gerasimov to Pajitnov. The trio decided to write a computer game of their own, with Gerasimov taking point as programmer and graphics designer. They warmed up by converting some of Pavlovsky’s older projects and daydreamed about selling a collection of their work, which they called a computer funfair.

Well, yes, it’s yet another game similar to the original Tetris, but hopefully the similarities between YourTris and other Tetris clones will end there. With any luck, future NES Classics will leave Pac-Man to the arcade emulators, and let everyone enjoy the best thing to come out of Russia since vodka. But even once the demand and supply are in harmony, this could still prove to be a popular and long-lasting item. There’s no reason NES Classic couldn’t enjoy similar longevity. There’s a reason if we’re still talking about Tetris after more than 30 years fron its original release. Although it isn’t quite as revolutionary as the original, Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best-made game on the NES by a good margin. It takes everything that made the original game amazing and combines those qualities with innovative ideas and intelligent refinements.
